World Water Day: Habitat for Humanity Argentina and the Right to Water
Every March 22, World Water Day is observed, a date established by the United Nations in the 1990s to highlight the importance of freshwater in human life and to promote solutions that ensure access to water across the globe.
This year, the thematic focus once again highlights the relationship between water, sanitation, and gender equality. Millions of women around the world carry water to their homes every day, yet they are often excluded from decisions regarding its management. Recognizing their role and guaranteeing their participation is key to achieving fair and sustainable access.
Water is not only a natural resource: it is an essential human right. Without safe access to drinking water and sanitation, there can be no adequate housing or healthy environment. For this reason, Habitat for Humanity Argentina works in informal settlements with families in vulnerable situations to help them gain access to proper sanitation. At the same time, in the southern area of the City of Buenos Aires, we support community-based organizations through improvements that facilitate access to water.
Actions promoted by civil society include the use of technology to distribute water in areas facing scarcity; social awareness and public policies aimed at changing behaviors; the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the elimination of water pollution; as well as climate change planning and international cooperation. All of these efforts seek to improve living conditions for people around the world and to ensure a more just and sustainable future.
World Water Day is an opportunity to reflect and take action. Every person can make a difference—by proposing initiatives, ideas, and knowledge, or by supporting projects or joining as a donor or sponsor of humanitarian initiatives. We thank those who already collaborate with this cause, because their commitment to water is also a commitment to life.
